In partnership with the Torsey United Methodist Church in Readfield, ME, the Winthrop United Methodist Church has a sister relationship with the Sabanagrande Church of the Iglesia de Christo de Nicaragua. This sister relationship is an outgrowth of the Nicaraguan Covenant that the New England Conference of the United Methodist Church has with Iglesia de Christo. The sister relationship was begun in 1986 as an expression of Christian fellowship among people who believe in solidarity and social justice. From that time, it has been a concrete way to establish links of friendship and mutual knowledge between individuals of two countries whose socio-economic and cultural realities are different, but who have common objectives in their lives based on the Gospel of Christ.

In October, 2000, Jeff Toothaker and Ned Crockett from the Winthrop United Methodist Church travelled to Nicaragua to visit with the people of the Sabanagrande church. They brought with them school supplies and other articles that the people there could use.

They returned with some gifts from the Sabanagrade church, including a goblet that is now often used in our church for communion services, but more importantly, they returned with an intimate understanding of the people of our sister church and their faith. The photographs on this web page are some of those that Jeff and Ned brought back with them to share with the people of the Winthrop United Methodist Church so that we all could better know the people of Sabanagrande.
